CHENNAI: Electricity consumers can soon stop lining up before the counters in local Electricity Board (EB) offices spending time and energy to pay power bills in the State.

A hassle-free mobile app is in the pipeline to enable payment of the bills using a smart phone. Minister for Electricity, Prohibition and Excise P Thangamani on Monday made the announcement in the Assembly at the end of a debate on demand for grants to his department.

Thangamani also announced that Amma green villages would be established by the Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) to generate green power by utilising the locally available sustainable energy sources. The Electricity Department is also going to roll out a Tatkal scheme to provide free power connections for  agricultural purposes. Those who want to avail themselves of the scheme should deposit a one-time payment.
