Greater Chennai top cop to appear before High Court

Greater Chennai police Commissioner S George will appear before a single judge of the Madras High Court at 2.15 pm on March 22.

CHENNAI: Greater Chennai police Commissioner S George will appear before a single judge of the Madras High Court at 2.15 pm on March 22. An assurance to this effect was given by the Additional Advocate-General Venkatramani, when contempt proceedings against George came up before Justice N Kirubakaran on Friday. Recording the submission, the judge posted the matter for Wednesday.

The issue relates to a contempt plea against the top city police officer, in which he failed to appear before the court, but instead sought the court to dispense with his appearance. Annoyed over the officer’s attitude, the judge on Thursday pulled him up and wondered whether it was a sin for the officer to appear before the court. “If top officers displayed such attitude towards judicial orders, how would their subordinates  respect their orders,” he had observed.

On behalf of Pon Thangavelu of Injambakkam, advocate AP Suryaprakasam had filed the contempt application seeking to punish the CoP for his failure to carry out the December 2 court order. By that order, the judge had directed him to provide protection to Thangavelu, who apprehended danger to his life for exposing the alleged amassment of wealth by local councillor Annamalai.
