Delegation of farmers from Tamil Nadu meets Arun Jaitley, demands writing off debts

In the 15 minute meeting the union minister assured them that he will take up the issue with the Reserve Bank of India.

NEW DELHI: A representation of farmers from Tamil Nadu protesting in Delhi on Tuesday went and met Union minister Arun Jaitley regarding their demand for writing off farmers debts.

In the 15 minute meeting the union minister assured them that he will take up the issue with the Reserve Bank of India, secondly Jaitley suggested that they should meet the Water minister Uma Bharti regarding their demands for a networking of all rivers.

Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker and AIADMK leader M Thambidurai was the one who met the farmers and took them to Jaitley, he was present in the meeting.

"We have got confidence that at least the Central government is heading to our demands, but until there is any concrete assurance we will not call off the protest" said P. Ayyakannu leading the protest of the farmers.

Staging a protest for more than a week at Jantar Mantar farmers have been demanding a drought relief package of Rs 40,000 crore from the Centre for Tamil Nadu, farm loan waiver, setting up of the Cauvery Management Board and the unification of rivers among others.

“In 48 hours if there is no solid assurance from the Central government then we will commit suicide in this same spot” Ayyakannu added.
