CHENNAI: A 35-year-old man died of swine flu at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) on Tuesday.

G Ramesh, resident of Tiruvannamalai, was working as a electrician in Chennai. He was admitted to a private hospital at Anna Nagar on Saturday with fever. “The doctors claimed it was normal fever and ordered blood test. But his condition kept deteriorating, so we shifted him to RGGGH on Tuesday evening, where he died within a few hours,” said a relative.

Speaking to Express, Dr K Narayanasamy, Dean (in charge), RGGGH said, the patient was admitted around 6.30 pm and died around 8.30 pm.  “We couldn’t do any tests because he died in a couple of hours of admission. We suspect him suffering from “respiratory distress syndrome”, he added.

Ramesh’s test report dated March 18 accessed by Express showed he tested “positive for H1N1 Virus”. The test was done at a hi-tech diagnostic centre, a private lab in Ayanavaram authorised by the government to conduct the tests. But the Dean said, “we cannot go by the report of the private lab. We will send the sample for testing tomorrow.
