CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has requested Centre to sanction Rs 736.64 crore for constructing new bus stands and improvement of existing ones in urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu municipal administration minister S P Velumani submitted a memorandum in this regard to Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday. In his memorandum, it was mentioned that out of the 124 municipalities, bus stands were available only in 112 municipalities and land constraint has been the main reason for non-availability.

The proposal included two special bus stands with 150 bays at Coimbatore and Tiruchy at a cost of Rs 352 crores, Class ‘A’ bus stands in Madurai, Vellore, Erode and 11 other municipalities apart from one Class ‘B’ bus stand at Tirunelveli.
