Tamil Nadu pushes for GST rate cut

CHENNAI: Government on Friday reiterated its demands for reducing as well as waiving GST on many items. Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar who attended the 23rd GST meeting at Guwahati raised the issues faced by the State on higher GST for many items.

An official release here said the late fee of `200 per day for the delay in filing the necessary forms to the department was levied on traders. Now, in the interest of the traders, the late fee had been exempted for July, August and September. If some traders had already paid the late fee, the amount would be adjusted towards the tax to be paid by them in future. Besides, the meeting also discussed reducing the late fee and extending the deadline for filing forms by traders.

The minister also urged the GST Council to consider complete waiver of GST for unbranded food items, handloom and powerloom goods, drinking water sold in 20 litre cans, rice bran, kolusu, metti and hip belt made of silver, mangalasutra, clothes made of silk, silk yarn, vibhuthi (holy ash), condemned tyres, sikaikai, dried arecanut, handmade candles and locks. The minister also demanded reduction of GST on many items.
