Chief Minister opens fourth drinking water scheme in Thoothukudi

THOOTHUKUDI:A new taluk centring Eral would be formed to serve public more effectively, said Chief Minister Edapadi K Palaniswami while addressing a gathering during MGR’s birth centenary function in Thoothukudi on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister also announced welfare schemes to benefit 24,000 people and launched the much-awaited fourth pipeline drinking water scheme. Palaniswami said that the fourth pipeline scheme aims at distributing Thamirabarani river water from Marudhur anaicut to the Thoothukudi corporation at an estimated cost of `282.44 crore. It has the capacity to supply 86 MLD of water.
Inaugurating the project, the chief minister said, “Over 98 percent of the project has been completed and 10,000 house service connections have been given so far. Another 50,000 connections would be given within six months,” he said.

Moreover, the project will help supply water to public daily. Palaniswami explained that 20 overhead tanks have been built under the project to supply potable water. The implementation of the project will help public get water daily against the present scenario of once in eight days, he added.

The chief minister announced carving out of a new taluk centring Eral as the headquarter in order to dispense government welfare and address public needs in an effective manner. Other announcements include, animal husbandry dispensary at Periyasamipuram and Agilandapuram in Kayathar union; modernisation of VOC market with parking facilities; two godowns of 2,000 metric tonne and 5,000 metric tonnes at Thoothukudi and Pudur regulated markets respectively; Primary Health Centres (PHC) at Vanaramuti in Kayathar taluk and Sivagnanapuram in Vilathikulam taluk; seven check dams across the district; upgrading Manapad beach into a tourist centre with adequate infrastructure facilities; ‘Manimandapam’ for SP Aditanar at Tiruchendur; and a road from Meelavittan to Maniachi running parallel to the railway track. The chief minister also appreciated the successful efforts made by collector N Venkatesh to make the district Open-defecation free.
