CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the authorities concerned to ensure that the mortal remains of Sridhar Dhanapalan, who allegedly killed himself in Cambodia on October 4, be brought to India within 24 hours.

Justice M S Ramesh gave the directive while passing urgent orders on a writ petition from Dhanalakshmi, daughter of Sridhar Dhanapalan of Kancheepuram, on Tuesday.

Earlier, it was brought to the notice of the judge that the Cambodia Immigration Department has assured to issue an exit permit to bring the body of Sridhar to India. The Additional Solicitor-General told the judge that the Department of External Affairs also did not have any objection in executing the necessary travel documents for the purpose of bringing the mortal remains.

Since Sridhar died on October 4, it would be appropriate that an exercise of issuing travel documents and bringing the mortal remains to India are executed at least within 24 hours from the date and time of the receipt of a copy of this order, the judge said.

Originally, Dhanalakshmi had approached the authorities concerned, both in India and Cambodia, to take steps to bring the body of her father, who, as per the Cambodian medical reports died of cardiac arrest, to India. As there was no response, allegedly due to her father’s involvement in various crimes, she moved the High Court and made a mention before Justice Ramesh on Monday morning. And considering the urgency of the matter, the judge had directed the government advocate to get instructions from the authorities concerned.

Accordingly, when the matter came up on Tuesday, the ASG told the judge that both the governments in India and Cambodia have no objection is sending the body of Sridhar to India. Following this, the judged gave the directive.
