VELLORE: We have often heard people complaining that no work in government offices are done without the officials allegedly demanding bribe. Heading to the long-standing complaints of the people of the Fort City that the Corporation officials were demanding bribe for any and all work, the officials of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-corruption (DVAC) conducted a raid at the Corporation office on Monday morning.

A sum of Rs1,39,700 of unaccounted and unclaimed money was seized from the Corporation office following the raid. They conducted the surprise check following complaints that the officials were demanding two per  cent commission from contractors and bribe from people, who come to the Corporation office for various works.

The 15-member team was led by M Balasubramaniam, Additional Superintendent of Police. While taking to Express he said, “We have seized Rs 1,10,000 from P Kubendran, the Commissioner, while Rs 20,000 was seized from Malligeswari, a head writer at the Corporation office and a sum of Rs 9,700 was seized from Bangaramma, a retired officer, who was working as a daily wage labourer at the Corporation office.
Later, the Commissioner’s vehicle was also searched by the officials of the DVAC. The raid lasted for nearly five and half hours.

The previous Commissioner T Kumar was arrested in a raid by the Vigilance and Anti-corruption department (DVAC) officials on charges of demanding and receiving bribe.
