CHENNAI: The nomination of Ananth Padmanabhan, former director, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, as one of the members of the search panel for selecting a vice-chancellor of Anna University, has been upheld by the Madras High Court.

The first Bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar upheld the nomination while dismissing a PIL from P Uchimakali, State secretary, Students Federation of India (SFI) on Wednesday. After going through the records, the judges said they found no illegality in the nomination of Ananth Padmanabhan as he had resigned from the post of professor of eminence.

The research supervisor post that he still held was a post without remuneration, the Bench said and dismissed the petition. The petitioner had alleged that Padmanabhan was nominated as a search panel member despite being a professor of eminence in Anna University, which was against the university by-laws that prohibited persons related to the university in any manner being nominated as a search committee member.
