CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on Saturday greeted Banwarilal Purohit on his appointment as new Governor even as the opposition parties hoped he would "find a solution to the political confusion prevailing in the state".

Palaniswami called up Purohit and conveyed his greetings as well as those on behalf of the people of Tamil Nadu, an official statement said here.

DMK Working President M.K. Stalin, in a statement, said the new Governor should function independently and impartially while fulfilling his constitutional duties.

PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss also extended greetings to Purohit and said the new Governor should try to find a solution to the prevailing political confusion in the southern state.

Ramadoss also urged Purohit to order the Palaniswami government not to decide on policy matters till decisions on court cases pertaining to disqualification of 18 AIADMK legislators and confidence motion sought by the Chief Minister soon after his government was sworn in.

Welcoming Purohit's appointment, which comes after a long period of interim arrangement wherein Maharashtra Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao was given additional charge of Tamil Nadu affairs, the Indian Union of Muslim League (IUML) also hoped there would be an end to the confusion.

Asserting that an "extraordinary political situation" prevailed in Tamil Nadu, IUML President K.M. Khader Mohideen said: "We hope the Governor will chart a path to change the current situation and also enable smooth growth."
