Madurai: Five women try to end life over alleged police atrocity

Five women tried to commit suicide by pouring kerosene on themselves in protest against alleged police atrocity, at Madurai Collectorate campus on Saturday.

MADURAI: Five women tried to commit suicide by pouring kerosene on themselves in protest against alleged police atrocity, at Madurai Collectorate campus on Saturday. The incident happened when Revenue Minister R B Udhayakumar was inspecting the preparations for a government function.
Police officials at the site stopped the women and detained them for inquiry.   

The women were identified as Eshwari and her daughters Arumugathai, Lakshmi and her relatives Gandhimathi and another woman Lakshmi. They reportedly took the extreme step after five of their relatives were taken into police custody. The women alleged that they were not allowed to meet their arrested relatives and being threatened by the police.
