CHENNAI: Three days after the sleuths of the Directorate of Anti Corruption and Vigilance (DVAC) conducted a search at the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police in Thirumangalam and seized around Rs 5.08 lakh, an FIR has been filed against him on corruption charges.On Monday, the DVAC officials filed an FIR in which it was charged that Assistant Commissioner P K Kamil Basha and his special team were collecting illegal gratifications from petitioners and counter-petitioners for settling their issues.

Based on a tip off, a special team of seven members including D Raman, deputy inspection cell officer, reached Kamil’s office at around 8.35 pm and conducted a check and found Rs 2.50 lakh kept in a table drawer. Sources said that Kamil was involved in receiving bribe from contractor Selvam in a land purchase. However, when he was questioned by the officials, he said he had borrowed the money for his son’s post-graduation studies. After interrogating Selvam, a resident of Kodungaiyur, Rs 2.58 lakh was seized from him as he also failed to offer a proper explanation for the source of the cash.

Along with the money possessed by Selvam, the DVAC officials seized a total of `5.08 lakh.
A case has been registered under section 102 CrPc (Any police officer may seize any property which may be alleged or suspected to have been stolen, or which may be found under circumstances which create suspicion of commission of any offence) and under Prevention of Corruption Act 1988. It may be noted that Kamil Basha is due to retire next year. “He was transferred when severing as a inspector in Red Hills after he was charged with working with redwood smugglers,” said the source.
