Chennai corporation knocks on actor Ramki's door for pending tax

Chennai corporation on Wednesday issued notice to actor Ramki for allegedly failing to pay property tax for his Nungambakkam residence for the last 13 years.

CHENNAI: City corporation on Wednesday issued notice to actor Ramki for allegedly failing to pay property tax for his Nungambakkam residence for the last 13 years. The civic body pasted a notice on his door and said if he fails to pay the pending sum of Rs 1.27 lakh, action would be taken.

According to officials, Ramki had failed to heed repeated reminders to pay  property tax. “The intention of the large notice is to shame him and ensure he pays the dues fearing public ridicule,” said a corporation official.

Corporation officials say this method would be used in future if celebrities fail to pay the tax.
“It is not something they can’t afford. They just think they don’t have to pay tax,” said the official.
The corporation has collected Rs 586 crore as property tax so far this year as against Rs 577 crore during the corresponding period last year. Officials estimate that nearly ` 150 crore of property tax is yet to be collected.
