26 Tamil Nadu fishermen attacked, abducted by Andhra Pradesh counterparts

NAGAPATTINAM: Andhra Pradesh fishermen have allegedly attacked and abducted 26 of their Tamil Nadu counterparts for fishing in AP waters in two separate cases, officials said today.

In a complaint lodged with the Nagapattinam Collector C Sureshkumar, representatives of fishermenfrom Akkaraipettaipanchayat said 10 fishermen of Nagapattinam were today attacked by the Andhra Pradesh fishermen near Nellore coast, leaving three seriously injured.

The three have been admitted to hospital, Anandavel, who led the delegation of representatives, said.

The other seven fishermen were abducted in a mechanised boat, he alleged.

Yesterday, 19 Nagapattinam fishermen were attacked and abducted in two mechanised boats by their Andhra Pradesh counterparts, Anandavel alleged.

The Akkaraipettai fishermen panchayat representatives have urged the state and Union governments to secure the release of the 26 fishermen and the three boats.

CPI Tamil Nadu secretary Mutharasan has condemned the attack and urged the state government to ensure proper treatment and compensation for the affected fishermen.
