CHENNAI: A special clinic will be set up at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai for treatment of transgenders at the cost of Rs 30 lakh, said Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar on Thursday.

Making 108 new announcements in the Assembly, Vijaya Baskar said, “A special clinic will be set up for treatment of transgenders at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Madurai Rajaji Medical College Hospital at the cost of Rs 30 lakh”.

“We face discrimination wherever we go. Having a special clinic for us is a good thing. I welcome it,” said S Tamil Selvi, a transgender, who is aspiring to pursue nursing course.

“All specialists will be available at the clinic. So, transgenders can get a special care. Even psychologists will be available. The facility will be rolled out soon and the location to set up the clinic is yet to be finalised. It is a gesture from the government to transgenders for their well-being,” said Dr R Jayanthi, Dean, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
