10-year-old on Fast for Closure of TASMAC Shops

A ten-year-old girl along with her father, who was addicted to the liquor and later recovered from it, went on a fast demanding complete prohibition in the State, before the district collector’s office, on Tuesday.

Jothimani, Class IV student from Madurai sat on the hunger strike along with her father Mohanraj (37), demanding the complete closure of TASMAC shops in the State. The father and the girl, residing in Munisalai in the city, came along with her family members and placed posters describing the suffering caused by liquor.

Latter on, the police held peace talks with the girl and the father and took them to the Collector camp office. Further, they gave a representation to the Collector L Subramanian. The collector  assured that he would take their demand to the attention of the government.

Speaking to Express, Mohanraj, father of the girl, said he was working as a daily wage labourer and was addicted to alcohol, from an younger age. Mohanraj also said his family suffered a lot and lost their social status due to his drinking habit. Latter on, Mohanraj was admitted into a de-addiction centre and later recovered from the habit.

Jothimani stated that, after the recovery of her father, she decided to preach the evils of liquor to the people.  She also stated that the coming New Year should be a liquor-free year to the people of the State.The girl further pleaded the Chief Minister to consider closing all the liquor shops in the State in order to save the families.
