11 TN fishermen injured in fresh mid-sea attacks

Eleven fishermen hailing from the coastal hamlet of Vellapallam near Vedaranyam taluk of the district were injured in separate mid-sea assaults carried out by their Sri Lankan counterparts off the coast of Kodiyakkarai in the late hours of Friday.

Sources said, four fishermen, including boat owner Krishnamoorthy (37),  Rajamanickam (50), Govindaraju (40), all hailing from Vellapallam fishing hamlet and Krishnamoorthy (42) of Naluvethapathy had ventured into the sea in a fibre boat on Thursday.

As they were fishing South East off the coast Kodiyakkarai, they were allegedly assaulted by Sri Lankan fishermen who came in four boats with sharp weapons.

In another incident on the same day, seven fishermen who ventured in to sea from Vellapallam on two boats were attacked in a similar fashion. Kannaiyan (39), Thangadurai (44), Thanigachalam (35), and Subramanian (44) who were in a in a fibre boat and Rathinavel Kuppu (50), Champion Rathinavel (21) and Balakrishnan (26) on the other boat were attacked. 

The fishermen claimed that they were relieved of their  catch and GPS equipment by the Sinhalese fishermen. The fishermen reached Vellapallam in the wee hours of Saturday. Krishnamoorthy, who sustained cut injuries on his legs, and five other fishermen with minor injuries are undergoing treatment at Nagapattinam GH.
