The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) may be soaring in Delhi, but it seems to have hit turbulence even before getting off the ground in Tamil Nadu. A group of party functionaries have staked their claim to decision-making powers in the party’s state unit, alleging that they are being maliciously sidelined by their own party. The group is led by K Balakrishnan who claims to be the state secretary of the party. Balakrishnan has levelled allegations of mischief against AAP national executive member and state convenor Christina Samy.

In a dramatic press conference on Tuesday, the group led by Balakrishnan came out viciously against Samy and state co-convenor M Lenin. The meet itself was declared ‘unauthorised’ by Samy and Lenin. “The problem is that they let us join the party. We are educated and we asked this cunning woman (Samy) for the accounts of the party. That’s why we are now being targeted,” claimed M Krishnamurthi, a member who said he has received an e-mail stating that he had been expelled from the party.

Balakrishnan, meanwhile, said he had been appointed state secretary of the party at the beginning and accused Samy of violating party discipline. The dissenting group defended the party leadership’s seeming inaction, saying it did attach importance to the TN unit but had been busy with government formation in Delhi. They expressed confidence that they would prevail in the matter once the leaders in Delhi devoted time to it.
