Tension gripped Ariyur village near Sholinghur on Monday after a statue of Dr Ambedkar was desecrated.

More than 100 residents of the colony  squatted on the Arakkonam-Sholinghur road for around an hour in the morning, condemning the mischievous act and demanding action against the perpetrators. Police used mild force to disperse the agitators and restore traffic.

Superintendent of police of Vellore P Vijayakumar reached the spot in the morning and conducted an inquiry into the incident.

“We have deployed around 100 police personnel in and around the village and colony to avert untoward incidents,” said deputy superintendent of police (DSP) S Seetharaman.

The hands of the cement statue of Ambedkar had been damaged on Sunday night or in the wee hours of Monday, said the DSP. “A case was registered. We suspect a few locals. We will soon arrest them,” the DSP added. The statue was installed two decades ago.
