The Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday rebooted the storm over the 2G spectrum allocation scam by putting up purported phone-tap recordings incriminating scam-accused MP Kanimozhi of receiving kickbacks funneled through Kalaignar TV. But her father and DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi and the Kalaignar TV management maintained innocence.

“They are all false,” was Karunanidhi’s simple defence when asked about the tapes, which by AAP’s own admission are ‘not independently verified’.

Karunanidhi also slipped around a query over his own involvement, by asking the questioning journalist why he was not asking questions about a disproportionate assets case against another leader.

A statement from the management of Kalaignar TV, in which Kanimozhi is a stakeholder and a former director, was also terse. It also followed the same tack as Karunanidhi. “The way that clip has been released and the timing of its release after three years give rise to doubts that some mischievous forces have recorded these fake conversations with political motives to hurt Kalaignar TV. That’s because such things have happened before,” read the statement.

CBI to Probe Tapes

An agency report  said that the CBI has decided to analyse the taped conversations. “A conversation which is said to have been taken place in February-March, 2011 purportedly between Sharad Kumar Reddy of Kalaignar TV Pvt Limited and Jaffar Sait, the then Additional DGP (Intelligence) has come to the notice of CBI through media reports,” CBI spokesperson said in a statement.

The CBI is in the process of obtaining the recordings and transcripts of these conversations, the spokesperson said. “We will first establish the veracity and genuineness of these tapes,” a senior CBI officer said.

AAP demanded an independent probe into the alleged role played by Karunanidhi and the police officer in “covering up” the scam.

Based on the claims, CBI decided to analyse the conversations and would soon approach AAP seeking a copy of these tapes.

In its charge sheet in 2G scam, the CBI had alleged that Kalaignar TV, in which Kanimozhi and her mother Dayalu Ammal had 80 per cent stake, allegedly received `214-crore from Shahid Balwa’s Dynamix Realty, Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables and Cineyug Films in return of favours given to Swan Telecom by then Telecom Minister A Raja in 2G spectrum allocation.
