Embattled former Union Minister M K Alagiri found a ray of hope in the political darkness enveloping him when thousands of cadre from across his bastion, Madurai, and other southern districts turned up to greet him on his 63rd birthday during the celebrations here on Thursday.

Buoyed by the huge turnout, Alagiri laid down conditions for a compromise with the high command while vehemently scotching speculations that he might be offered a plum post in the party.

Demanding revival of the disbanded party’s Madurai urban unit, the former south zone organising secretary said, “I will agree for a compromise only on the condition that the suspension of my supporters be revoked.”

Expressing his gratitude to President Pranab Mukherjee for wishing him on his birthday, he said that the occasion had been made special by the greetings of DMK cadre and Tamils across the world.

Alagiri said that except DMK patriarch, M Karunanidhi, and brother, M K Stalin, most of the family members had extended their wishes to him. “My father did not wish me,” he said.

However, the suspended leader was upbeat over the celebrations on Thursday. A jubilant Alagiri said, “I have been celebrating my birthday ever year, but only this time I get a feeling that the functions have been organised in a grand manner.”
