‘Ettavathu Vallal’, a book on former chief minister MG Ramachandran, written by Manavai Pon Manickam, was released in English as ‘MGR the Philanthropist Ultimate’, at the 37th Chennai Book Fair on Thursday, the eve of MGR’s birth

anniversary.

The book has been translated and edited by Puthiyankom Murali Menon and published in two volumes  by Variety House publications. Several yesteryear film personalities like SN Parvathi, LR Eshwari, CID Shakuntala, Kausalya Senthamarai, P Vasu and SP Muthuraman were the first to receive copies of the book, which was released by cinematographer and novelist Thangar Bachchan.   “It was a wonderful experience burning the midnight oil in translating this book. This will surely be a source of inspiration to everyone reading it,” said Murali Menon.

Meanwhile, the Chennai Book Fair saw significantly lesser sales this Kaanum Pongal than last year. Kalyan Kumar, Proprietor of Bellco Publishers and Book Sellers said that the figures compared to last year, or even Wednesday, were poor. “The number of visitors were a lot more on Wednesday. And with today’s crowd seemingly less inclined to buy books, the sales are not satisfactory,” he said. Most other publishers at the fair agreed with him, except for Higginbothams, which was perhaps the only stall to see an increase in revenue this year. “We are seeing a 25% increase in sales compared to last year. But it still isn’t as good as it was on Wednesday,” said M Padmanabhan of Higginbothams.

“With crowd pullers like Solomon Pappaiah and popular TV show host Gopinath set to speak in the next few days we hope many more will come to the fair”, said Meenakshi Somasundaram, president of Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI). The 37th Chennai Book Fair organised by BAPASI on the YMCA grounds in Nandanam will be on till January 22.
