Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has expressed grief over the death of organic farming crusader G Nammalvar. She deputed Urban Development and Housing Minister R Vaithilingam to pay respects to the scientist on behalf of herself and the government. “His paid yeoman service to the field of organic farming and nature-driven agricultural practices. His commitment to the field was demonstrated in the fact that he quit government service in disagreement with the promotion of chemical fertilisers,” said Jayalalithaa in her condolence message.

The CPM and PMK also expressed grief over Nammalvar’s death. In statements released on Tuesday, CPM hailed his contribution to the popularisation of natural farming practices. “Even to those who disagreed with his views, Nammalvar’s commitment to the welfare of the farming community is admirable,” said CPM state secretary G Ramakrishnan.
