The Alagiri camp again faced the heat from the DMK high command as the party suspended 10 rebels, including former MLA S S Ghouse Batcha, said to be loyalists of the Madurai strongman on Sunday.

Sources said that the action was taken against the ten members for throwing their lot with the expelled leader in the recently-held LS polls.

The district DMK authorities claimed that the decision to suspend the 10 members was taken after it was found that they had indulged in anti-party activities. The members reportedly campaigned for NDA candidates.

Sources said that the list of members suspended by the high command included, P Gopinathan, husband of former Mayor Thenmozhi, M Udhaya Kumar, former urban district joint secretary, ‘Misa’ M Pandiyan, former urban district treasurer, M Esakkimuthu, former urban district presidium chairman, and former MLA Ghouse Batcha.

The party had suspended 10 members, including former Union Minister Alagiri, last month.

Sources said that ahead of the polling, Alagiri had invited MDMK chief and NDA’s Virudhunagar constituency candidate Vaiko at his house. Later, Alagiri’s supporters, including P Gopinathan, had felicitated Vaiko while he was winding up his campaign in Madurai. The Alagiri loyalists had reportedly campaigned for the DMDK in Madurai constituency.

This had triggered a clash between Gopinathan and P Thirumurugan, a DMK functionary. Later, Gopinathan had lodged a police complaint, leading to Thirumurugan’s arrest.
