In yet another blow to former Union Minister M K Alagiri, the DMK high command on Thursday suspended five of his loyalists for involvement in anti-party activities.

The high command suspended DMK district deputy secretary and party opposition leader in the corporation council M L Raj, former DMK district Panchayat chairman Ashok kumar, DMK Kottampatti Union Secretary Rajendran; DMK Adi Dravidar Welfare Committee organiser, Melur A Muthuvel and a local functionary Vellayan for involving in activities that brought disgrace to the party.

A senior leader in the party said all the functionaries were close loyalists of former Union minister and DMK south zone organising secretary M K Alagiri. The action was taken after they sent nearly 2,500 faxes separately to DMK leader M Karunanidhi and party treasurer M K Stalin demanding action against Muthuvel for filing police complaint against the DMK Madurai district secretary P Moorthy. “We sent 2,500 faxes separately to Kalaignar and Stalin demanding action against Alagiri supporters for filing false complains against Moorthy and attempting to weaken the party in Madurai,” said the senior functionary.

The police have filed case against Moorthy under the Scheduled Caste /Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 following which Muthuvel filed a complaint with the police claiming that Moorthy had abused him in derogative words mentioning his caste when he painted a graffiti to greet Alagiri.

“Alagiri supporters were emboldened to file such false complaints using SC/ST Act after Alagiri made an appeal recently to senior functionaries to follow his orders in Madurai. Alagiri also toured the Melur MP constituency after he returned from Chennai last week. In Melur he also told the party functionaries not to follow orders from others,” claimed a Stalin loyalist.

A DMK cadre S Kannan also filed a similar complaint with the city police against former Madurai Mayor P Kulanthavelu and DMK Madurai wing secretary M Jeyaram claiming that they have abused him referring to his caste name while putting up publicity materials for Aalgiri’s birthday celebrations, said the senior functionary.

The functionary added that the high command has acted positively this time. Incidentally, the high command took this action when Alagiri was on foreign trip along with his wife Kanthi.
