It Is a Birthday Gift From My Father: Alagiri

Hours after DMK leader Karunanidhi openly accused Alagiri of nurturing hatred against Stalin, the former Union Minister denied the allegations levelled against him by his father.

Expressing shock at DMK patriarch charging him with using harsh words against Stalin in a television interview, the former south zone organising secretary said, “I never expected him to level such charges against me. I accept this as my dad’s birthday gift to me.”

Though Alagiri had passed a gag order on the media personnel asking them to listen to what he had to say, the emotional turmoil he was in was visible on his face at his residence here on Tuesday.

Reiterating that his suspension was the fallout of his raking up the issue of irregularties in the internal elections, Alagiri said, “Many complaints were being lodged by the cadre and union level functionaries over the way the party election was conducted. I met Karunanidhi on January 24 to seek justice. But, what I got in return was only suspension. That is the gift I got for fighting for justice.”

Tearing into the allegations levelled by Karunanidhi, Alagiri said that the statement issued by DMK general secretary, K Anbazhangan, citing the reasons for his suspension, had no mention of the charges made by the DMK chief. “No such reason was mentioned in the article published in Murasoli too,” he pointed out.

Responding to Karunanidhi’s charge that he should have approached Anna Arivalayam or DMK committee to get his grievances redressed, Alagiri took a dig at the high command saying that these days decisions were taken at CIT Colony in a veiled reference to Kanimozhi.

“Senior DMK leaders meet there (CIT colony) and take decisions. If the cadre and union secretaries fax their complaints to the party headquarters, they never reach the party leader. Such incidents forced me to meet Karunanidhi directly at his residence and explain the election-related complaints, not only in Madurai, but across the State,” he said.

It was only after his sustained efforts failed that he spoke to media about the incidents, he said, adding that he had met with party deputy general secretary, Duraimurugan, and had asked him to examine the issue.

Exuding faith that irrespective of what charges were levelled against him, Alagiri said that the party cadre knew him better. “They will not believe the allegations. The cadre will be with me,” he said.

Ending on a sentimental note, Alagiri said, “We wish Karunanidhi a long life and also hope that he outlives us in every aspect of life.”
