CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday expelled former Rajya Sabha MP K Malaisamy from the AIADMK for violating party discipline. “Malaisamy has been relieved of all responsibilities of the party, including primary membership,” the AIADMK supremo said in a statement here.

Jayalalithaa said Malaisamy had acted against the principles and ideologies of the party besides bringing disrepute by his conduct.

The former MP’s expulsion came a day after his interview to some television channels, including the BBC, hinting that Jayalalithaa would like to have ‘close liaison’ with Narendra Modi in the event of him becoming the Prime Minister.

He also said that Jayalalithaa and Modi were good friends despite political differences. However, the AIADMK chief, on her return from Kodanadu, reserved comments on political queries about a possible Third Front until Friday.

The expulsion indicates that the views expressed by him are not a part of the official stand of the AIADMK. During her election campaign, Jayalalithaa accused both Congress and BJP of adopting ‘anti-Tamil Nadu stand’ on many vital issues. Jayalalithaa also called the Gujarat model of growth a myth and pointed out that Tamil Nadu had done better as per many growth indicators.

Malaisamy, a former IAS officer, held many posts, including that of Tamil Nadu Home Secretary.  After his retirement, he was appointed as the Commissioner of Tamil Nadu State Election Commission and was later elected to the Rajya Sabha on an AIADMK ticket. His term came to an end in 2010.
