Continuing her attack on the BJP and its PM candidate Narendra Modi, Chief Minister and AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa on Saturday charged that the people of Tamil Nadu could not expect anything good from the party for resolving the Cauvery water dispute and Modi was trying to divert the issue.

Referring to the two suggestions made by Modi in his interview to a Tamil daily — establishment of a joint Karnataka-Tamil Nadu body and interlinking of rivers — for resolving the Cauvery dispute, Jayalalithaa said, “Karnataka has been known for betraying Tamil Nadu by inviting it for talks. The DMK has also been ‘practising’ this ‘deceptive trick’ for a long time.” “Taking steps to release the water in accordance with the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal is the only fair step to be taken now. I wanted to know whether the BJP would promise to implement the final award of the Cauvery Tribunal. But instead of promising that, Modi has suggested establishing a body for resolving the dispute. This is nothing but diverting the issue,” the CM said during an election rally at Triplicane here.

“I also wanted to know whether the BJP would promise to link the rivers — Mahanadi, Godavari and Cauvery. Why is the BJP hesitating on this count? It can’t even assure that it would allocate funds for intra-linking of rivers in Tamil Nadu. Above all, the BJP has not assured that the Cauvery Management Board would be formed in accordance with the final verdict of the Cauvery Tribunal. As such, Tamil Nadu will not get anything good from the BJP to resolve the Cauvery dispute. The only party which can ensure a solution to this issue is the AIADMK and I appeal to you to vote for us,” the Chief Minister said.

Jayalalithaa also took on Modi over his remarks on the fishermen issue. Recalling his recent remarks at Kanyakumari, she said Modi charged that the problems faced by Tamil Nadu fishermen could not be resolved because of the ‘clash’ between herself and Congress president Sonia Gandhi. However, a few days ago, speaking at Ramanathapuram, Modi had alleged that the fishermen of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu were arrested by Pakistan and Sri Lanka just because there was no strong government at the Centre.

“Going by the logic of Modi’s remarks at Ramanathapuram, can we infer that the ‘clash’ between him and Sonia Gandhi was the reason for the arrest of Gujarat fishermen?” she asked amidst applause.

Jayalalithaa further said the electorate should choose the AIADMK, which had been really concerned about the welfare of the Tamil Nadu fishermen.

Earlier in the day, she kickstarted her campaign for the Lok Sabha election from Alandur, which comes under Sriperumpudur constituency.

During her campaign in Central Chennai constituency, she attacked DMK candidate Dayanidhi Maran.
