CHENNAI: Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa has a tight schedule in the national capital on Tuesday which includes her meeting with President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Whenever Jayalalithaa visits Delhi, she creates political ripples and this time too, her trip has generated much expectations since the AIADMK has become the third largest party in Parliament after the Lok Sabha election.

Jayalalithaa is scheduled to leave Chennai around 8.15 am, and arrive at Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi around 11.30 am, where all AIADMK MPs will be waiting to give her a rousing reception. She is scheduled to meet the Prime Minister at his office at 1.30 pm, and submit a memorandum on ‘very crucial issues relating to Tamil Nadu which have been pending with the government of India’.

At 2.30 pm, Jayalalithaa is scheduled to call on the President at Rashtrapathi Bhavan. Later, she will be meeting Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be meeting her at Tamil Nadu House between 3 and 4 pm.

During her meeting with Modi, Jayalalithaa will seek his urgent attention to safeguard the legitimate interests of the State and to propel the State on a faster growth plan. On Sunday, Jayalalithaa had expressed her displeasure over the hike in diesel price and had sought the intervention of the Prime Minister in rescuing the fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy.

During the discussions, Jayalalithaa is likely to seek concrete steps to end the woes of Tamil Nadu fishermen. During the campaign for Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu, Modi had said the fishermen were harassed by the Lankan Navy, while Gujarat fishermen were harassed by Pakistan — all due to the UPA’s meek stand.

During the past three years, Jayalalithaa has written several letters to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on various issues faced by the people of Tamil Nadu.

The highest number of letters were on the problems that the fishermen were facing. But the Congress-led UPA government turned a Nelson’s eye to most of her fair demands.

The Chief Minister’s demand for the formation of the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Water Regulation Board to implement the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal is yet to be fulfilled by the Centre.

Besides, the  retrieval of Katchatheevu and restoring the traditional fishing rights of Tamil Nadu fishermen, issue regarding Sri Lankan Tamils, and setting right the corridor congestion so that Tamil Nadu is enabled to purchase power from the northern states, and a special package of financial assistance to Tamil Nadu are some of the major issues she is likely to raise during her meeting with the Prime  Minister.
