The Congress that is hoping to revive its ties with the DMK for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, on Saturday night got a veiled threat from M Karunanidhi over the delay in the implementation of the Sethusamudram project.

“Don’t give up the Sethusamudram project…. we will wait till you implement the project…. if you give up the project, we will also give you up (neengal kai vittu vittaal, naangalum engal kaiyai vittu viduvom)... this is not a threat…I say this out of affection and friendship between us,” Karunanidhi said speaking at the 50th birth anniversary celebrations of VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan here.

“Despite our repeated appeals, the Central government has not taken any steps to implement the project,” Karunanidhi said and added that the Sethusamudram project should be implemented for the benefit of the future generations of the Tamil race.

In his acceptance address, Thirumavalavan said Karunanidhi has been his inspiration for a long time in his political career and the DMK chief’s writings and speeches had taught him many lessons. “Karunanidhi was responsible for VCK members becoming MLAs and MPs,” he recalled. Dravidar Kazhagam president K Veeramani presided over the celebrations.
