Tension prevailed in Lawspet following assault on a Congress worker who was passing by the house of a ruling AINRC MLA here on Thursday morning.

The local unit Congress functionary, Aroumugham, was on his way to his booth, while he was taunted by some of the AINRC workers, who were standing near the house of the ruling party MLA, Vaidyanathan. Verbal exchanges occurred following which the Congress functionary was allegedly assaulted by the rival party members.

Following this, the Congress workers went to the Lawspet police station demanding the arrest of the MLA and his followers. They also tried to picket the police station. The N R Congress volunteers also reached the station and they were joined by Vaidyanathan and another ruling party MLA, Kalyanasundaram.

Both the groups were engaged in heated arguments and shouted slogans at each other. Inspector General of Police, Praveer Ranjan and Superintendent of Police (North), Praveen Kumar Tripathy reached the spot and held talks with both the groups.

On information, Congress candidate V Narayanasamy reached the station and tried to pacify the Congress workers. He spoke to the police officials, who assured him that action will be taken.

The ruling party leader V Bhalan and chief whip, G Nehru also reached the spot. However, the police managed to pacify both the sections and they disbursed.

Praveen Kumar Tripathy told Express that if the rival parties file complaints, the police would probe the incident.
