DMK president M Karunanidhi and other political leaders have strongly condemned the twin blasts that occurred on the Bangalore-Guwahati Express in which a 24-year-old woman was killed and 14 others injured at the Central Railway Station here on Thursday.

In a statement, Karunanidhi expressed his condolence to the bereaved family and his good wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured in the blast. He exhorted the State police to coordinate with intelligence agencies and probe whether the terrorists had planned any further attacks.

State BJP president Pon Radhakrishnan claimed the blasts were aimed at party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who was scheduled to address meetings in Nellore and Madanapalli on Thursday.

Describing the incident as a “crime against humanity”, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss urged the State government to ensure proper treatment for the injured passengers. He said the solatium of `1 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased and `5,000-25,000 for the injured was inadequate. At present a solatium of `5 lakh is given to victims of train accidents and `1 lakh to the injured, he pointed out. Hence the same amount should be sanctioned to blast victims too.

DMDK chief Vijayakant said the Centre and State governments should crack down on terrorists with an iron hand. All India National League president S J Inayatullah said the Central and State governments should take immediate steps to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

A Faizur Rahman of the Islamic Forum for the Promotion of Moderate Thought said the blasts appeared to be an attempt by misguided criminals to vitiate peace in the State of Tamil Nadu and called for a thorough probe.

CPI State secretary D Pandian said the Centre should increase the relief to the kin of the deceased to `10 lakh and the injured to `1 lakh.

TNCC chief B S Gnanadesikan said the State police should put down the sinister designs of terrorists with an iron hand. AISMK president R Sarath Kumar and Kongu Nadu Jananayaga Katchi founder G K Nagaraj also condemned the blasts.
