NDA’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Sunday hailed the formation of the BJP-led rainbow alliance in Tamil Nadu as the rise of a third front, which he claimed would prove to be an effective alternative to the DMK and AIADMK. Speaking at a rally on the grounds of A M Jain College in Meenambakkam here, Modi lashed out at both the Dravidian parties and accused them of devoting more energy to politicking against each other than working for the people.

Modi’s lashing of Tamil Nadu’s biggest parties came hours after AIADMK supremo and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa urged the voters of the State to refrain from giving a mandate to either the Congress or BJP. “This is not only an election which will decide the future of India, but also bring about a political change in Tamil Nadu. Now, the DMK rules for five years and the AIADMK rules for five years. There has been no other option. When they come to power, their culture is to devote their time and efforts to try and destroy each other, instead of focusing on the well-being of the people,” said Modi to loud applause from the crowd.

“Today, these two parties are taking the people for granted. That is why they manage two or three per cent of the vote in one way or the other to capture power. Now that Vaikoji, Ramadossji, Vijayakantji and other leaders have come together to raise a third power, the DMK and AIADMK will have to change their ways and actually work for the people,” he added.

Turning his ire on Rahul Gandhi, whom he referred to as a “shahzada (prince) born with a golden spoon”, Modi said the Congress vice president and his party had turned poverty into a “tourism destination”. Repeatedly referring to P Chidambaram as the “recounting minister”, Modi mocked him for not contesting the election. PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss, BJP State president Pon Radhakrishnan, national secretary Muralidhar Rao, South Chennai candidate L Ganesan and other leaders shared the dais with Modi.
