Further hearing on the batch of public interest writ petitions, which prayed for a direction to the Union Law Ministry to return the list containing 12 names for appointment as additional judges of the Madras High Court, is adjourned sine die by the Madras High Court on Tuesday.

A division bench of Justices V Dhanapalan and KK Sasidharan adjourned the matter without mentioning the date.

Originally, while entertaining the PIL from senior advocate R Gandhi on January 8 last, the bench had directed the Union Law Ministry and others to maintain status-quo in the matter of appointment of the new judges. Aggrieved, the Registrar-General of the Madras High Court moved the Supreme Court, which on January 13 had stayed the operation of the order of the High Court Bench.

When the matter came up, the RG placed on record the orders passed by the Supreme Court on January 13. β€œIn view of the fact that the matter is seized of by the Supreme Court of India and taking note of the order passed by it, we adjourn the matter sine die,’’ the bench said.

Meanwhile, advocates S Doraiswamy and P Rathinam have filed similar public interest writ petitions. The bench posted the matter for hearing after four weeks.

Court Boycott

The members of the Madras High Court Advocates Association on Tuesday decided to boycott all the courts and other fora in the City, on Wednesday (Jan 22) also.
