The regular pujas and abhishekams were stopped for more than one hour in the Lord Ramanatha Swamy temple in Rameswaram, after a pig entered into the temple on Monday morning.

Devotees and tourists were taking a holy bath in the 22 theerthams and performing pujas at the temple when a pig entered the temple through the East gate.  The devotees were shocked when they saw the animal running into the temple.

Temple staff and others chased the pig and caught it near the Goddess Parvathavarthini Amman temple and took it out of the temple.

As priests felt that the entry of the pig into the temple was an ill omen, pujas were stopped for more than one hour.

Devotees and locals also feared that the incident was a bad symbol. Pakshi Sivarajan, joint coordinator of Mutt and Mandhir Protection Association said the entry of the pig into the temple would affect the unity of the people and the temple premises should be cleaned according to Vasthu Santhi before the poojas were commenced.

Moreover, Akora Homum should be performed at the temple to preserve the holiness, he added.

The entire premises of the temple was washed with water and special consecration pujas were performed. Devotees waited till the consecration work was completed.

Selvaraj, joint commissioner of the Lord Ramanatha Swamy Temple Devasthanam said some municipal workers had chased the pig in the streets and it entered the temple accidentally.
