Tribal Children in Topslip Get School Lessons from Abroad Through Skype

For the first time in the State, tribal kids are receiving school lessons from overseas volunteers over Skype on a daily basis.

As many as 50 tribal kids in Topslip, in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, are getting the opportunity to receive lessons from eight volunteers in America, Australia and England as well as a few from other States in the country. The students are taught for three hours every day over Skype.

Saravanan Chandrasekaran of Wild Wing Trust, who introduced the facility to empower and educate tribal children, said, “The students show keen interest and are enjoying the lessons. This is the only tribal school in the state to use Skype to tutor students.”

The initiative was lauded by Collector Archana Patnaik, who visited the school to chair a grievance day meet for the tribals on Saturday.

Collector Archana said Rs 20 lakh worth solar power panels were given to the tribals to enhance their livelihood. Similarly, drinking water facilities were also implemented with the help of the local panchayat authorities.

Earlier, the Collector also gave away old age pension to 21 beneficiaries, community certificates to 11 beneficiaries, and ration cards to seven persons, besides welfare assistance to tribal people.

Field director of Anamalai Tiger Reserve (ATR) Rajiv Sri K Vastava, Valparai MLA M Arumugam, District Revenue Officer R Karpagam and Forest Ranger of Ulanthy Forest Range S Arokiyaraj Xavier were among those present during the function.
