District Collector R Nandagopal has appealed to  youngsters to get voter identity cards and exercise their franchise in the elections to uphold their social responsibility as part of the democratic process.

Presiding over the National Voters’ Day celebrations organized by the district administration at Voorhees College on Saturday, the Collector said, urged the young voters to propagate the importance of voting.

The youth were also urged to shun people offering money to gain votes. The Collector said nearly 1.33 lakh new voters have been added to the electoral rolls this year, of which over 45 percent were youth.

New voter IDs were issued to over 43,000 youth in the age of 18 and 19. 12 senior citizens who had cast vote for 10  to 14 times in their life- time were honoured on the occasion. Students from schools and colleges in and around Vellore carried placards to create awareness about  Voters’ Day and took out a rally from the Vellore Fort to Voorhees College.
