Banks asked to activate RuPay cards for rural folks

The state government wants Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to send `100 crore worth small denomination currency to all the post offices across the state so that disbursement of amounts to Aasara pensioners, NREGS workers, daily wagers and others can be done easily.

HYDERABAD:  The state government wants Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to send `100 crore worth small denomination currency to all the post offices across the state so that disbursement of amounts to Aasara pensioners, NREGS workers, daily wagers and others can be done easily.

The state-level task force committee on demonetisation held its first meeting at the Secretariat here on Thursday.

Addressing the meeting, committee chairman and finance secretary Sandeep Kumar Sultania wanted the bankers to activate RuPay cards to all the rural folks. This is the only solution to overcome shortage of currency and encourage digital transactions, he said. Sandeep Kumar Sultania wanted the bankers to motivate the public to operate their inactive bank accounts and link all the bank accounts with Aadhar numbers.

The finance secretary wants the bankers to furnish bank-wise and branch-wise lists on the details of prepaid cards. If there were no PoS machines, the bankers should ensure mobile PoSes were given, he said.

In its next allotment to the state, the Reserve Bank of India  should send small notes worth Rs 100 crore, Sandeep Kumar Sultania said.

These small notes should be sent to post offices, especially in rural areas so that disbursement of cash to Aasara pensioners and others would become easier, he added.

The committee has also resolved to request the RBI to appoint 21 coordinators to the 21 newly-formed districts to expand banking services. The committee has also directed the bankers to expedite distribution of RuPay cards and debit cards to all the account holders.

SBI general manager Giridhar, Andhra Bank DGM MV Ramanaiah, RBI AGM KB Subrahmanyam, SLBC AGM JB Subrahmanyam, chief post master general B Chandrasekhar and finance joint secretary Sai Prasad were present at the task force committee meeting.
