Cabinet gives nod for private varsities in Telangana

The government is expected to make a legislation to also allow global universities to establish their branches in the State.

HYDERABAD: Following in the footsteps of its Andhra Pradesh counterpart, the Telangana government too has decided to allow private universities to set up their centres in the State.

Similar to the AP Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Act, 2015, the State government is also expected to make a legislation to allow global universities to establish their branches in the state.

According to sources, the State Cabinet, which met here on Saturday under the chairmanship of chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, has decided to introduce a bill in this regard in the ensuing winter session of the State Assembly.

A Cabinet sub-panel headed by deputy chief minister K Srihari  has been set up to formulate the modalities for establishment of private universities in the State.

The panel, in which ministers - KT Rama Rao, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, G Jagadish Reddy, Jogu Ramanna and Talasani Srinivas Yadav, will study various models being followed in other states in this regard, before making its recommendations over the issue of allowing private universities into the State.
