CPI regrets SC rejecting plea for probe against PM

CPI National Council has expressed displeasure over Supreme Court refusing to probe graft charges against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

HYDERABAD: CPI National Council has expressed displeasure over Supreme Court refusing to probe graft charges against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Judiciary should avoid getting branded by either surrendering or avoiding such key issues,” the CPI said.

The party appealed to the apex court to order a SIT-monitored probe into the documents recovered during the raids conducted at the offices of Aditya Birla and Sahara groups in 2013 and 2014, which allegedly showed entries of bribes paid to high profile politicians including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was the then chief minister of Gujarat.

A day after CPI general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy disapproved Supreme Court’s decision refusing to probe into corruption allegations against PM, the CPI National Council on Thursday adopted a resolution on the same.

“The CPI National Council, which is in session in Hyderabad, noted that cognizance of the allegations against the Prime Minister needs to be taken up. Though overstepping of the judiciary is unacceptable, withdrawing itself from the statutory role of protecting Executive and Parliament through suo motu actions will only weaken democracy,” the resolution stated. The resolution further reads, “The seized documents clearly mentioned that money was paid to the then Gujarat CM.

Modi is neither speaking about these documents nor initiating measures to come out clean.” Meanwhile, in the second resolution, the CPI National Council expressed concern over the sufferings of the people of Manipur. “If the ongoing economic blockade imposed by the United Naga council and also the counter blockades in the valley areas of Manipur are allowed to continue, then it will prove dangerous for the nation.

Both Manipur and the Union government are responsible for the disastrous situation,” the party said. In another resolution, the CPI condemned the Centre’s decision to reduce the interest rate on the EPF accumulations. “The partyfeels the move to impose tax on EPF amounts to cheating,”it said.
