Telangana CM suggests measures for farmers’ welfare

Chandrasekhar Rao has urged the PM to introduce ‘one policy’ for agriculture sector across the country to raise the living standards of farmers.

HYDERABAD: Backing the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring in uniform policy across the country on imposing taxes, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has urged the PM to introduce ‘one policy’ for agriculture sector across the country to raise the living standards of farmers.

He sought the Centre’s financial help to those states which are implementing welfare measures such as crop loan waiver and free power for agriculture.

The Chief Minister, who had recently made the TRS plenary adopt a resolution urging the Centre to link NREGA to agriculture, said, “There is a hue and cry among the farmers due to scarcity of labour force in agricultural operations. In order to make NREGA more useful and productive to the agricultural operations, there is an urgent need to dovetail NREGA to agricultural operations. 50 per cent of the unskilled wages may be paid under NREGA and 50 by the farmers concerned.  This may be extended to those states who opt to avail this.”

While taking part in the third governing council meeting of the NITI Aayog held in New Delhi on Sunday, the CM suggested that entire country needs to be divided into crop colonies for specific crops, based on agro-climatic regions. “So that the Minimum Support Price (MSP) facility can be effectively ensured to benefit the farmers by preventing avoidable glut of certain commodities in the market,” he remarked.
