Penalty point system in the offing for Telangana motorists

Telangana government will soon implement the Penalty Point System by amending Telangana Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

HYDERABAD: Telangana government will soon implement the Penalty Point System by amending Telangana Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. This means, offenders will no more be able to get away only with a challan given by a traffic cop.

Every time a rule is broken, the offender would be accruing points. And once 12 points are accumulated in 24-months, the driving license stands suspended for a period of one year.  The system, announced through a government order issued on Monday, are specific to drivers.

This means that traffic cops will implement it through spot challan system. The PPS, first-of-its-kind in the country, lists 17 kinds of violations.  “We have two forms of challan system, one through spot checking and another through clicking photos.

Initially, rules will apply for spot challans because we have to verify drivers licence of person driving a vehicle. We will feed penalty points into computers,” said AV Ranganath, DCP (Traffic-II). The system will be implemented initially in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Rachakonda Commissionerates.
