Telangana veterinary university students protest GO on faculty recruitment

Students are angry because the GO accords permission for filling up of 101 positions of Veterinary Assistant Surgeons (VAS) in TS on contract basis.

HYDERABAD: A banner put up in front of PV Narsimha Rao Telangana Veterinary University screams, “Telangana oddu, ‘ummadi’ Andhra Pradesh muddu’ which roughly translates into ‘No to Telangana, united Andhra Pradesh is better’.

This banner was put up by students in response to a Government Order (GO) released last week by the department of Animal Husbandry Development and Fisheries. Around 550 students at the university protested against the order on Tuesday and conducted ‘vanta varapu’, as they cooked their meals in front of the varsity’s entrance. Students are angry because the GO accords permission for filling up of 101 positions of Veterinary Assistant Surgeons (VAS) in TS on contract basis and states that contract employees can be terminated without any reason.

Why are students praising erstwhile AP?

Students hung a banner praising AP outside their university because it was in erstwhile AP that around 500 positions of VAS were created after upgrading some Rural Livestock Units (RLU) to the level of Veterinary Hospitals. Out of these positions that about 251 positions were sanctioned for TS after bifurcation, of which 150 positions were filled through Telangana State Public Service Commission (TSPSC).

The GO now gives permission to fill the remaining 101 positions with contract employees. Students are also demanding that existing 1,185 RLUs in Telangana should be upgraded to the level of Veterinary Hospitals so that more positions of VAS are created. Katam Sridhar, a Master of Veterinary Science student said: “While AP has increased number of VAS positions in its state TS has not taken any such measure.”
