HYDERABAD: Following a decline in revenues under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, officials have decided to crack the whip on tax evaders. At a meeting conducted in Delhi on December 9, the Union finance ministry asked the states to conduct checks on highways against transport of goods without paying tax as check posts were abolished with the introduction of GST.

Initially, the government decided to be lenient towards the traders till the GST system stabilised. But in view of the sharp decline in the revenue across the country, officials looking after the implementation of GST wanted all the states to plug the loopholes.

Though Telangana had not much decline in its revenue, it has decided to conduct frequent raids across the state.“Of the 2,850 vehicles checked, 226 were found violating the tax rules. We have collected Rs 96.90 lakh in tax and an equal amount towards penalty,” state’s principal secretary (commercial taxes) Somesh Kumar said.

NATIONAL E-WAYBILL
The Centre has decided to introduce national e-waybills in January so that traders can generate e-waybills across the country with uniform fee in any state. The TS’ e-waybill network too will be merged with the national portal. Later, officials will intensify checks and see whether the power consumption by factories match their production figures or not
