Telangana State Road Transport Corporation to implement intelligent transport system across Telangana

Vehicle tracking, passenger information systems for 10,495 buses, 350 bus stations in TS

HYDERABAD:  The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) will implement Vehicle Tracking (VT) and Passenger Information System (PIS) for all its 10,495 buses across the state. By using the technology the corporation can stem the losses by improving operational efficiency. The project, based on ‘Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT)’ basis, will be executed by a Hyderabad-based NGO, Society for Accident-Free Environment (SAFE).

SAFE will set up and maintain complete infrastructure and software for 10,495 TSRTC buses and 350 bus stations. It will also set up control rooms at the corporations’ 95 depots and a central control room facility will come up at  Bus Bhavan, RTC’s headquarters. The first phase of the project will cover 4,000 buses in Karimnagar zone by January end. The rest of the buses will be covered by the end of March. “Live information about buses will be made available to the public on a mobile app, website and also on digital screens in the buses and at bus stations in the state.

The project cost will be met from commercial advertisement revenue and, at the end of  the project tenure, the total infrastructure will be transferred to the TSRTC,” said A Bharadwaj, member of the board of SAFE. Passengers will be provided with customised entertainment content  through in-bus wi-fi facility, particularly on long-distance services. The project will also facilitate various Management Information System reports for TSRTC for their requirements, he added.

This is not the first time the TSRTC is adopting technology for improvement of services. “TSRTC had introduced vehicle tracking and monitoring system in 1,230 city buses two years ago,” said A Purushotham, executive director, TSRTC’s Hyderabad.
