Telangana now more ‘power-hungry’ than ever

HYDERABAD: Demand for power in Telangana peaked to 180 million units on Thursday, a record consumption for the young state. Interestingly, the demand for power in the State has been steadily increasing right from the formation of the state.  The demand for power was initially just 120 million units per day. The demand touched 140 million units per day in January and the demand has jumped 40 million units in just 40 days, this season.

Reasons for spike in demand

The main reason for the increase in demand is that the State government has been supplying nine hours of power for farming activities. The rise in temperatures too contributed to increased consumption of power. There were good rains before the start of the Rabi season. As a result, the groundwater levels increased in the state.

Thus, the rabi crop cultivation with the help of borewells was high this season. However, the Transco officials insisted that there would be no power cuts in the state, as they had advanced planning including short term purchases.
