Speaking to mediapersons at Secretariat on Tuesday, Srihari said that of the total 3,687 contract lecturers around 50 percent were absent from duties for the past eleven days.

In view of the upcoming examinations, the contract lecturers should call off their strike, he said.

He said the two main demands of the lecturers is regularisation of their services and enhancement of salaries, which was agreed by the state government.

Srihari said that as per the government orders, the service break or unauthorised absence from duties would come in the way of regularising the services of the contract lecturers and appealed to them to call off the strike.

The process of regularising the services of contract lecturers was stopped due to a case filed in the High Court, he said. Though, the state government increased the salaries of contract lecturers from Rs 18,000 to Rs 27,000 per month, the contract lecturers wanted the hike as per the 10th PRC and went on strike.
