Hussainsagar remediation pilot project extended for a month

HMDA finds improvement in the lake water quality, to decide on project’s continuance

HYDERABAD: After the success of the pilot project on the cleaning of Hussainsagar lake taken up by Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) using water remediation system, HMDA has asked city-based Ezox Environment LLP to continue the process for another month.
HMDA had expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the free pilot project for improvement of quality of the lake water with Canadian innovative technology.

HMDA has permitted the agency to install two more such equipments—one at Bridge No.2 on Necklace Road and another at Bathukamma Park—to further improve the quality of the water and make the lake pollution-free. On the directions of the state government, HMDA had permitted Ezox Environment LLP to take up the pilot project free of cost for three months from March to June this year. Samples of the lake water were tested and the results showed improvement in the water quality, specifically in respect of enhancement in the levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) and reduction in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), besides a change in the colour and turbidity of the water.

According to HMDA officials, the remediation method reduces phosphorus, nitrates, chlorophyll, turbidity, bad odour; increases the level of dissolved oxygen; maintains aerobic conditions even at the bottom layer with a totally new approach for effectively removing chemicals and algae from water for clean lakes and a healthy environment without using chemicals or machinery.

The Ezox Environment LLP, in collaboration with Matrix Environment, a Canada-based company having expertise in control water pollution and remove sediments in water bodies, is  making efforts to remove pollutants from the Hussainsagar free of cost. However, removal of plastics and water hyacinth weed is not under their purview. The process of cleaning the polluted water is done manually. HMDA officials told Express that they asked EE LLP to submit detailed proposals with regard to methodology, manpower deployment, targeted water quality parameters as to enable HMDA to take a decision on continuing the project.
