HYDERABAD: Out of the 5,000 MW of solar power generation planned for a five-year period, the state government has made available 1,758 MW in the last two years. While speaking with TS Genco chairman and managing director D Prabhakar Rao and principal secretary S Narsing Rao on the solar power situation in TS here on Tuesday, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao expressed happiness with the achievement so far.

Prabhakar told the CM that  MoUs were signed for production of 2,000 MW of solar power and another 3,000 MW would be added in the next two years. On June 2, 2014, when Telangana was formed, there was only one mega watt of solar power available in the region. After the state government was formed, a new solar power policy was implemented.

The generation and distribution of solar power was decentralised and permissions for solar power plants were given on the basis of load on the substation. Local substations were linked with the solar power plants. Hence no effect on the grid. Under this policy, plans were drawn to generate 5,000 MW of solar power.

MoUs were signed for generation of 2,000 MW and as on date 1,758 MW of power was available. In the next three years, 3,000 MW more power would be added, taking Telangana to the comity of states which are generating solar power on a large scale.
